How to Reject Judgment in the Anti-Aging Conversation

It’s all too common to come across individuals who feel entitled to judge and criticize others for their personal choices. This morning, I watched a young TikToker, barely in her twenties, go on a rant about celebrities and women with “pillow faces” from using fillers. She boldly claimed she’s been advising women for years to stop overdoing fillers and fighting aging this way. Her tirade, filled with judgment and condescension, was a stark reminder of the toxic culture that has permeated discussions around aging and beauty.

How dare she sit there in front of her screen, using pictures of real women, and publicly scold them for their choices? Who is she to give herself permission to judge other women so harshly? This type of behavior is not only immature and insensitive but also deeply harmful. It perpetuates a culture of shaming and negativity that women, especially, do not need.

Embrace Positivity, Reject Judgment

Aging is a natural process, and how one chooses to handle it is a deeply personal decision. Whether someone opts for fillers, Botox, or prefers to age naturally, these choices should be respected. The pressure to conform to a single standard of beauty is already immense; adding judgmental commentary only makes it worse.

It’s essential to foster a culture of positivity and support. If influencers are against cosmetic procedures, they should focus on creating content that offers positive, useful advice on feeling and looking your best naturally. Share tips on skincare routines, healthy living, and self-care practices that promote well-being without tearing others down.

Personal Reflection: Embracing Aging with Grace

When I turned 50 two years ago, I decided to confront my aging process head-on and focus on improving my health before my appearance. I have always colored my hair and worn makeup, but this journey was about more than just the visible changes. I started working out and prioritizing my overall well-being. In doing so, I also stopped getting Botox and fillers, choosing instead to accept that aging skin can be a formidable enemy if you choose to make it one. I decided to embrace aging as a friend, not a foe. This is my personal journey, and while it has worked well for me, I am not here to judge anyone who chooses a different path.

Real-Life Examples of Diverse Beauty Standards

Take, for instance, the story of Maye Musk, who at 74, embraces her natural beauty with grace and confidence. She has become a role model for women of all ages, showing that aging can be beautiful and empowering. On the other hand, we have individuals like Kris Jenner, who openly discusses her use of cosmetic procedures. Both women, with their different approaches, exude confidence and inspire others to make choices that best suit their personal comfort and aesthetics.

Similarly, consider the journey of Helen Mirren, who has spoken out about the joy of aging and accepting oneself. Mirren’s perspective emphasizes self-love and acceptance, serving as an inspiration to many. Alternatively, look at the choices of Jane Fonda, who has candidly discussed her cosmetic surgeries as part of her self-care routine. These diverse paths highlight the importance of respecting each individual’s decisions.

Insights from Experts

Dr. Ava Shamban, a renowned dermatologist, notes, “Beauty is deeply personal, and there’s no right or wrong way to approach aging. The key is to make informed choices that align with one’s values and desires.” Similarly, beauty industry expert Bobbi Brown emphasizes, “Empowerment comes from feeling good in your skin, whether that means embracing your natural look or opting for enhancements. Judgment has no place in personal care.”

Statistics on the Impact of Positive Beauty Campaigns

Research has shown that inclusive and positive beauty campaigns significantly impact how women perceive themselves and their beauty choices. According to a study by the Dove Self-Esteem Project, 70% of women feel pressured to reach an unrealistic standard of beauty set by media and advertising. However, campaigns that celebrate diversity and promote self-acceptance can counteract this pressure. For example, Dove’s “Real Beauty” campaign led to a 14% increase in women feeling represented in media, which correlates with higher self-esteem and body confidence.

Call to Action

I reject the toxic behavior of judging others for their personal choices. Embrace a positive, inclusive approach to beauty and aging, one that respects and celebrates individual decisions. Whether through natural methods or cosmetic enhancements, every woman deserves to feel confident and beautiful in her own skin. Let’s lift each other up, not tear each other down.
