Top Trends from Copenhagen Fashion Week: Denim, Earth Tones, and More

Copenhagen Fashion Week has increasingly become a beacon of innovation and sustainability within the global fashion calendar. The Spring/Summer 2024 shows, which took place from August 7th to 11th, 2023, offered a rich display of trends, design statements, and standout collections that are likely to influence fashion far beyond the Scandinavian borders.

This season, the runways were dominated by head-to-toe denim ensembles, showcasing how designers have reimagined this classic fabric. Denim, typically associated with casual wear, was elevated into full, tonal outfits that exuded both cool sophistication and modern appeal. Brands such as Saks Potts and Gestuz led the charge, offering variations of this trend that ranged from structured jackets to flowing, wide-leg jeans. The emphasis on denim underscores its versatility and enduring appeal, signaling its continued relevance in high fashion.

Earth tones emerged as another significant trend, offering a subtle counterpoint to the bold colors that have ruled previous seasons. Designers like GANNI and TG Botanical favored a palette of muted greens, browns, and beiges, allowing the craftsmanship and quality of the materials to take center stage. This shift towards more natural colors reflects a broader trend in fashion towards understated luxury and timeless elegance.

Wide-leg trousers, a staple of many wardrobes for several seasons, were also a key feature on the Copenhagen runways. Designers such as Remain and Cannari-Concept presented super-sized trousers that ranged from tailored to slouchy, cargo-style denim, highlighting the trend’s adaptability. The voluminous silhouettes offer both comfort and a sense of drama, making these trousers a must-have for the upcoming seasons.

In contrast to the relaxed and oversized shapes that have been popular, this season also saw a return to defined waistlines. Designers utilized belts, structured tailoring, and strategic cuts to accentuate the waist, adding a touch of femininity and structure to their collections. This trend was evident in the work of brands like Rotate and Gestuz, who used these techniques to create a balanced silhouette that combines elegance with modernity.

Sustainability was once again a hot topic at Copenhagen Fashion Week, with the event continuing to set the standard for eco-conscious fashion. This year, sustainability wasn’t just an ideal; it was a requirement. All participating brands were mandated to meet strict sustainability criteria, including the use of certified sustainable fabrics, fair labor practices, and waste minimization. Circular fashion was a significant focus, with many designers creating garments that can be reused, recycled, or repurposed, thereby reducing waste and encouraging consumers to consider the environmental impact of their fashion choices.

OpéraSport stood out for its commitment to zero-waste practices, with all fabrics in their collection made from industrial waste. Their garments are made to order, eliminating excess inventory and further reducing waste, positioning OpéraSport as a leader in sustainable luxury. This season, their collection blended sporty chic with baroque elegance, using quilting, vegan leather, and faux-fur stoles to add richness to their signature sporty silhouettes.

Stine Goya Straight Leg Pants

Stine Goya, a mainstay of Copenhagen Fashion Week, transformed her street into a runway for her “Homecoming” collection. The show was a celebration of both the familiar and the innovative, with crisp pleating, expressive floral prints, and sculptural silhouettes that highlighted Goya’s ability to blend personal narrative with high fashion. Supermodel Helena Christensen closed the show, adding a touch of glamour to an already memorable presentation.

Mfpen

Mfpen’s debut show was another highlight, combining punk-inspired tailoring with a strong commitment to sustainability. The collection featured super-light tailoring made from deadstock materials, offering a fresh take on corporate aesthetics. The use of recycled and organic fabrics added authenticity and environmental responsibility to the collection, making it both stylish and sustainable.

Copenhagen Fashion Week 2024 was not just a display of trends and designs but a testament to the city’s role as a leader in sustainable fashion. The trends that emerged from this event—head-to-toe denim, earth tones, wide-leg trousers, and defined waistlines—are poised to influence global fashion in the seasons to come. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, Copenhagen’s commitment to innovation and sustainability will undoubtedly serve as a model for others to follow.
