Early Francis Kurkdjian Perfumes for MDCI: A Complete Review of the Trilogy

Parfums MDCI was founded on the belief that beauty, culture and craftsmanship should guide perfumery. In 2006, when Claude Marchal asked Francis Kurkdjian to create a feminine fragrance for the young house, Kurkdjian returned with three. They were complete, distinct and deeply refined, so Marchal released them all.

Promesse de l’Aube, Rose de Siwa and Enlèvement au Sérail form a quiet, elegant trilogy. Each name carries a cultural reference, each composition reflects classical French technique and each perfume has its own emotional temperature. What they share is a sense of balance and a level of refinement that feels rare today.

I tried all three. I loved all three. I would buy full bottles of each.

Promesse de l’Aube

A Dawn Inspired Floral with Soft Radiance

The name Promesse de l’Aube, or Promise of the Dawn, echoes the title of Romain Gary’s memoir filled with hope, devotion and beginnings. The perfume opens with bright citrus that feels like first light. Bergamot, Brazilian tangerine and Californian lemon create a fresh, sparkling entrance before the heart reveals a soft pairing of Egyptian jasmine and ylang-ylang.

As it settles, Indian sandalwood, tonka bean and vanilla give gentle warmth. There is sweetness in the heart, but not to excess. The perfume shifts from bright to honeyed to quietly sensual.

Promesse de l’Aube feels intimate, feminine and romantic. It behaves like a date night fragrance that stays close to the skin and leaves a soft glow rather than a trail. It is tender, elegant and full of promise.

Notes
Top: bergamot, Brazilian tangerine, Californian lemon
Heart: Egyptian jasmine, ylang-ylang
Base: Indian sandalwood, tonka bean, vanilla

Rose de Siwa

A Sparkling Rose from an Ancient Oasis

Rose de Siwa takes its name from the Siwa Oasis in Egypt, a place known for mythology and rare, resilient roses. The concept fits the scent perfectly. It opens with litchi, peony and hawthorn, creating a fresh, airy brightness. The heart brings two varieties of rose, Moroccan and Turkish, softened with violet.

The base of cedar, musk and vetiver keeps everything clean and modern. Nothing about the composition feels heavy or ornamental.

Rose de Siwa is the kind of rose you can wear anywhere. It is luminous, balanced and easy to love. It is a true signature scent candidate because it works in all seasons, all settings and on all occasions. A sparkling, charming rose that feels timeless.

Notes
Head: litchi, peony, hawthorn
Heart: Moroccan rose, Turkish rose, violet
Base: cedar, musk, vetiver

Enlèvement au Sérail

A Luxurious Floral Oriental with Classical Depth

Enlèvement au Sérail references Mozart’s opera The Abduction from the Seraglio, a story filled with romantic tension and exotic imagery as imagined through an eighteenth century European lens. The fragrance captures that mood through a deliberately retro floral oriental structure.

It opens with ylang-ylang, mandarin and Italian bergamot. The heart moves into jasmine sambac, tuberose, Turkish rose and a touch of wallflower. As it dries, patchouli, Indian sandalwood, vanilla and Haitian vetiver create a warm, velvety base.

This perfume feels luxurious and quietly powerful. It evolves throughout the day, softening into a sensual floral bouquet before settling into warm woods. It has the richness of vintage perfumery with a subtle modern freshness that keeps it wearable.

Enlèvement au Sérail is elegant, textured and confident. I call it a rich girl floral because it carries itself with calm, expensive ease.

Notes
Head: ylang-ylang, mandarin, Italian bergamot
Heart: jasmine sambac, tuberose, Turkish rose, wallflower
Base: patchouli, Indian sandalwood, vanilla, Haitian vetiver

Before He Was Famous

What struck me most while visiting these three MDCI perfumes is how clearly they reveal Francis Kurkdjian before the era of global hits and blockbuster identities. Promesse de l’Aube, Rose de Siwa, and Enlèvement au Sérail feel like early chapters in a creative language he would later simplify, amplify, and project across the world. Here, the florals are textured, the emotions are unhurried, and the compositions breathe in a way that’s become rare in modern perfumery. These scents remind you that before Baccarat Rouge or the reins of Dior, Kurkdjian was a classically trained Parisian perfumer shaping small, beautiful worlds one accord at a time. Testing them today feels like opening a window onto the past, when niche still meant craft, and artistry wasn’t designed for algorithms or airports. It’s a quiet reminder of what French perfumery can be when it’s allowed to stay intimate.
