When Dolce & Gabbana launched Devotion in 2023, the golden heart-shaped flacon hinted at the fragrance’s promise, a sunlit gourmand that captured joy and elegance in one breath. Behind this creation stands Olivier Cresp, a master perfumer whose signature is woven into some of the most iconic fragrances of our time, from Mugler’s groundbreaking Angel to Nina Ricci’s Nina. In Devotion, Cresp created a gourmand confection that is bright, wearable, and wholly Italian, echoing the charm of summer landscapes kissed by citrus. But with Devotion Intense, he deepens the narrative. This is no mere flanker, it’s a bold, sultry reinterpretation that manages to stand as a statement of its own.
The Original Devotion: An Italian Confection in Sunlight
The first Devotion opens with a gleam of candied lemon, a nod to the Amalfi coastline where citrus groves meet sea breeze. But where many citrus-forward perfumes remain ephemeral and sharp, Devotion softens into a luminous heart of orange blossom. Its gourmand edge comes alive in the base, where a creamy, caramelized vanilla accord settles on the skin like sunshine lingering after a Mediterranean afternoon.
It’s deceptively simple yet beautifully balanced. Sweet without being cloying, uplifting without being juvenile, Devotion is a wearable ode to Italian indulgence. On warmer days, it sparkles, becoming a perfect companion for airy linen dresses and golden-hour walks.
Devotion Intense: When Night Falls
With Devotion Intense, Olivier Cresp takes the DNA of the original and infuses it with a sense of decadence and intrigue. If Devotion is sunlit gold, Intense is burnished bronze, a richer, more complex composition that unfolds in layers.

The opening retains a gourmand shimmer, but here the hazelnut steps forward, roasted and enveloping. It’s warm, nutty, and textured, an unexpected note that adds a luxurious, almost niche quality to the fragrance. The orange blossom, familiar from the original, reappears but feels creamier, less floral, more velvety. As the scent settles, the vanilla deepens and gains weight, cushioned by smoky tonka bean and a whisper of resinous amber.
Perfumer: Olivier Cresp
Launch Dates: Devotion (2023), Devotion Intense (2024)
Fragrance Notes:
- Devotion: Candied lemon, orange blossom, vanilla
- Devotion Intense: Hazelnut, orange blossom, vanilla, tonka bean, amber
When to Wear:
- Devotion: Warm, sunlit days
- Devotion Intense: Cooler seasons, date nights, and sultry summer evenings
The result is magnetic. Devotion Intense is a fragrance that clings to the skin, leaving a trail of sweet sophistication, one that made itself known to me as I wore it to bed, whispering softly throughout the night and greeting me again in the morning. Few perfumes achieve that sense of longevity without veering into overwhelming territory, but this one manages to balance presence and poise.
Cresp’s Vision: Blurring the Line Between Designer and Niche
Olivier Cresp is no stranger to gourmand fragrances, having famously introduced the world to Angel’s groundbreaking blend of patchouli and praline. In Devotion Intense, he channels that mastery with a modern lens, creating a scent that straddles the line between designer accessibility and niche luxury.

This is what makes the Devotion duo so remarkable. While I find myself increasingly drawn to niche perfumes for their artistry and distinctiveness, Dolce & Gabbana’s offerings pull me back into the designer world with creations that feel as meticulously crafted as their niche counterparts. Both Devotion and Devotion Intense are indulgent without being overly sweet, crowd-pleasing without sacrificing sophistication.
Wearing Them: Seasons, Occasions, and Sensibility
For me, the original Devotion will remain a staple for summer, a citrus-heavy gourmand that feels radiant and carefree. It’s a fragrance for golden days and warm skin, a light-hearted indulgence that never overstays its welcome.

Devotion Intense, on the other hand, is decidedly a cooler-weather scent. It’s what I’ll reach for during fall and winter, or on summer evenings when the air carries a hint of velvet warmth. Its richness lends itself perfectly to date nights and intimate gatherings, a fragrance to be noticed but not announced.
Flanker Fatigue: A Growing Concern
It’s worth noting that the fragrance industry often faces criticism for releasing numerous flankers, variations of a successful scent, that can sometimes feel repetitive. However, in the case of Devotion Intense, while it shares the core DNA of the original, the nuanced differences crafted by Olivier Cresp provide a distinct experience. That said, unless one has a particularly discerning nose, both versions might feel similar, and owning both may not be necessary.
While niche perfumes will always hold a special place in my heart and collection, it’s scents like Devotion Intense that remind me why designer houses remain irresistible: they deliver beauty, wearability, and luxury with surprising nuance.
As much as Devotion and Devotion Intense stand out in their own right, they inevitably raise a broader question: Are we, as fragrance lovers, growing tired of flankers? Has the industry pushed beloved DNAs to their limit, or do reinterpretations like Devotion Intense still manage to surprise and delight?
I’m curious to hear your thoughts, have you tried either of these fragrances? Does the original’s citrusy glow win your heart, or do you prefer the richer, sultrier warmth of Devotion Intense? Let me know which one you reach for and whether you think this is a duo worth sharing shelf space in your collection.
