Is Your Perfume Aging Your Skin?

I recently watched a YouTube video in which a younger man suggested that older women should avoid spraying perfume on their necks or the backs of their hands because perfume ages our skin. Aside from being deeply irritating, the comment reminded me how often perfume is blamed for problems it does not actually cause.

Can alcohol-based fragrances temporarily dry the skin? Yes, particularly if your skin is already dry or sensitive. But temporary dryness is not the same thing as premature aging. Skin ages naturally over time, while cumulative sun exposure is the leading external cause of visible aging. Smoking, air pollution, genetics, nutrition and other lifestyle factors also play a role.

So if you are concerned about the appearance of your neck, chest and arms, consistent sun protection and a thoughtful skincare routine will have a far greater impact than where you choose to wear your perfume.

As I turn 54, I am noticing that the skin on my neck, chest and arms is becoming thinner and drier, and perfume does not always perform on it the way it once did. Because I love fragrance so much, I have started thinking about body care as part of the perfume ritual rather than something separate from it. My focus now is broader: not only facial skincare, but consistent care for the areas where I actually wear perfume. When the skin is properly hydrated and supported, it feels more comfortable and fragrance tends to wear better, too.

This is the routine I follow and the products I recommend within each category. Think of them as examples rather than a shopping list. You certainly don’t need every product mentioned here.


Step 1: Start With Clean, Comfortable Skin

Every good routine begins in the shower.

The goal is to cleanse the skin without stripping away its natural oils. Harsh cleansers can leave the skin feeling tight and dehydrated, making it less comfortable before you even begin layering skincare.

My favorites include UNI Plush Marine Shower Oil and Glossier Daily Oil Wash. Both cleanse while helping maintain the skin’s moisture barrier, leaving the skin soft rather than squeaky clean.

If your skin feels rough or flaky, gentle exfoliation once or twice a week can also help remove dead skin cells and create a smoother surface for moisturizers and fragrance.


Step 2: Replenish Hydration

Hydration is the foundation of healthy-looking skin.

Body serums are often overlooked, but they can make an enormous difference, particularly on the neck, chest and arms where skin tends to become thinner and drier with age.

Step 3: Give Your Neck and Chest Their Own Routine

Most of us stop our skincare at the jawline.

The neck and décolletage receive years of sun exposure yet rarely receive the same level of care as the face. These areas deserve dedicated products formulated to improve hydration and support the appearance of firmer, smoother skin.

Step 4: Treat Areas That Need Extra Support

Certain parts of the body, such as the upper arms, abdomen and thighs, may benefit from more targeted products designed to improve hydration and the appearance of firmness.

Step 5: Moisturize Generously

A good body lotion is probably the most important step in the entire routine. Well-moisturized skin simply feels healthier, looks healthier and often provides a better surface for fragrance.

My everyday favorite is Nécessaire The Body Lotion, though OneSkin OS-01 Body also works beautifully as a moisturizer. Allow your moisturizer a few minutes to absorb before applying fragrance.


Step 6: Lock Everything In

If your skin is particularly dry, finishing with a body oil helps seal in moisture while leaving the skin beautifully conditioned.

Step 7: Layer With Scented Body Products

One of the pleasures of being a perfume lover is extending the fragrance experience beyond the bottle. Scented body oils and fragrance milks create another opportunity to build your scent while nourishing the skin. Some products I particularly enjoy include:

Your neck, chest and arms deserve just as much attention as your face. If you’re concerned about how those areas age, don’t stop wearing perfume. Instead, build a thoughtful body care routine that focuses on hydration, barrier support and consistent sun protection.

Perfume should be the finishing touch, not the scapegoat. The products mentioned throughout this article are those I personally enjoy and recommend within each category. You certainly don’t need every one of them. Choose the products that suit your skin, your budget and your goals, and remember that consistency matters far more than owning an overflowing bathroom cabinet.
