How to Adopt the Dark Academia Aesthetic

Dark Academia is back, and while today’s youth may proudly claim this aesthetic, it’s not exactly new. As someone born in 1972, I can’t help but smile at how this intellectual, moody style that many of us embraced decades ago is once again enjoying the spotlight. In fact, Dark Academia has a long lineage, resurfacing in different generations, each time with its unique flavor but always grounded in a love for art, literature, and intellectual pursuits.

The Origins and Revival of Dark Academia

The essence of Dark Academia is timeless. From literary scholars of the past to brooding intellectuals of the 20th century, this aesthetic has lived through generations in different forms. For me, growing up in the ’90s, it was our own vibe before the name “Dark Academia” ever existed. We were drawn to the allure of Gothic architecture, tattered volumes of classic literature, and the thrill of immersing ourselves in knowledge.

Yet even before us, you could trace this aesthetic back to the Romantic poets, classic philosophers, and those who found beauty in melancholic reflections. The youth today are rediscovering this, merging it with modern elements, but at its core, Dark Academia remains unchanged, rooted in a deep appreciation for the beauty of learning, often cloaked in shades of charcoal, burgundy, and black.

A Personal Connection: Dark Academia Then and Now

Looking back, my love for this aesthetic was inevitable. As a teenager and young adult, I gravitated towards anything that stimulated intellectual conversation, whether it was through books, films, or art. My wardrobe naturally reflected this, with dark colors dominating, my long dark hair, and an affinity for layered textures that exuded mystery and depth.

I found solace in places that mirrored this energy, quiet libraries, shadowy museums, and, for a time, I was obsessed with the city of Prague. For me, Prague is the epitome of Dark Academia as a place; it’s a city steeped in history, filled with Gothic spires, winding cobblestone streets, and an aura that’s almost poetic in its darkness. It’s fascinating to see this aesthetic come back into vogue, giving it a fresh but familiar spin.

At 52, I’m delighted that Dark Academia is “in” again, but I also view it with a sense of nostalgia. It’s not just about fashion, it’s a lifestyle that blends introspection, a love for the classics, and an appreciation for the darker, moodier sides of life.

What Exactly is Dark Academia?

At its core, Dark Academia is an aesthetic that romanticizes the pursuit of knowledge, typically set against the backdrop of ancient libraries, Gothic architecture, and the rituals of academic life. The style draws from the collegiate looks of European universities, think tweed blazers, woolen sweaters, pleated skirts, and oxfords. The palette is decidedly muted, with browns, blacks, and deep jewel tones taking center stage.

But beyond fashion, it’s about a mindset. Dark Academia embraces the intellectual and the enigmatic, often celebrating figures like Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Brontë sisters. There’s a certain reverence for the past, whether through the classical literature you read, the old films you watch, or the historical places you visit.

How It Fits Into an Elevated Classic Lifestyle

Dark Academia aligns beautifully with an elevated classic lifestyle. The aesthetic, rooted in timelessness and intellectual depth, is more than just a fleeting trend; it’s an expression of refined taste and sophistication. Here’s how you can integrate elements of Dark Academia into your life:

  1. Wardrobe: Focus on quality, tailored pieces that nod to academic traditions. Wool coats, tailored trousers, and lace-up brogues are key. Mixing vintage finds with high-quality classics ensures that your wardrobe remains both elegant and aligned with the aesthetic.
  2. Home and Decor: Your surroundings can echo the mood too. Dark wood furniture, antique accents, and curated collections of books and art bring this aesthetic into your living space. Consider incorporating textures like velvet and tweed for an added layer of richness.
  3. Rituals: Embrace the lifestyle by revisiting hobbies like reading by candlelight, journaling in beautiful leather-bound notebooks, or indulging in the slow pleasures of art galleries and museum visits. There’s something incredibly refined about allowing yourself to enjoy these quieter, more thoughtful moments.

Dark Academia Through the Lens of Time

As trends come and go, it’s clear that some aesthetics, like Dark Academia, are evergreen. For those of us who’ve lived it through different eras, this revival feels like a comforting return to something familiar yet endlessly captivating. Dark Academia is more than a look; it’s a way of life that treasures the beauty of knowledge, the allure of history, and the elegance of introspection. Whether you’re new to it or revisiting it like I am, there’s no denying the timeless charm of this intellectual and aesthetic movement.
