It’s 2025, Pantyhose is Reclaiming Its Place in Fashion

There’s a distinct sense of elegance that comes with slipping on a pair of pantyhose. For me, it’s like returning to a familiar, cherished ritual. As a child of the ’90s, I remember watching my mother get ready for work, she’d smooth a pair of pantyhose up her legs, giving a final glance in the mirror before slipping into her heels. It was the finishing touch, a signal that she was ready to conquer the day. Decades later, as pantyhose reclaims its place in fashion, I can’t help but smile at the nostalgia and excitement I feel seeing them make a stylish comeback.

From Utility to Iconic Fashion: The History of Pantyhose

Pantyhose wasn’t always the sleek, fashionable accessory it is today. It started out as a simple, practical solution in the late 1950s, when women needed a seamless way to cover their legs as hemlines rose. My first memory of pantyhose is a vivid one, grappling with the texture, feeling both mystified and frustrated as a tiny run appeared, barely after I’d pulled them on. My sister would smile knowingly, handing me a bottle of clear nail polish with a wink: “This will fix it.” The sharp smell of the polish and the sticky feel on my fingers are memories woven into the fabric of my childhood.

The Golden Era of Pantyhose: Power Dressing at Its Finest

By the time the ’80s rolled around, pantyhose was a fashion staple. My teenage years were filled with images of women in sharp suits, perfectly tailored blazers, structured skirts, and sleek black pantyhose completing the look. I admired them from afar, imagining what it must feel like to be that polished and powerful. Pantyhose was part of the uniform, a subtle detail that spoke volumes about a woman’s presence and poise. Even now, when I slip on a pair before a meeting or a formal event, I feel a bit of that power dressing magic, like I’m channeling the quiet confidence of those corporate trailblazers.

The Fall and Rise: A Fashion Accessory Rediscovered

Then came the early 2000s, and with it, the bare-legged trend. Suddenly, pantyhose was labeled old-fashioned, a relic of a bygone era. I remember the shift, seeing magazine spreads and red carpet looks that championed bare legs as the ultimate mark of effortless chic. For years, my collection of pantyhose sat untouched in a drawer, a symbol of a style I wasn’t sure would ever return.

But fashion, as we know, is cyclical. Today, pantyhose is back, and this time it’s not just about practicality, it’s about making a statement. From sheer polka dots and delicate lace to bold opaques and shimmery finishes, pantyhose has been reimagined for the modern wardrobe.

How to Wear Pantyhose Today: Elevate Your Look with Thoughtful Details

CALZEDONIA, Next Please 30 Denier Sheer Tights, $25.00

The Classic Sheer: There’s something timeless about a pair of nude or black sheer pantyhose. It’s the ultimate choice for adding subtle polish to an outfit. When I want to feel especially put-together, I reach for a pair to wear with a fitted pencil skirt and heels. It’s a simple yet sophisticated look that never fails.

Fragrance Pairing:

Chanel No. 5 Eau de Parfum – A classic choice for a classic look. This iconic fragrance combines aldehydes, jasmine, rose, and a powdery dry down, making it as timeless as sheer pantyhose.

Playful Patterns: If you’re looking to make a statement, patterned tights are the way to go. I recently wore a pair of polka dot tights with a sleek black dress to a dinner party, and they became the unexpected highlight of the outfit. The best part? They’re an easy way to add personality without feeling overdone.

Fragrance Pairing:

  • Tom Ford Lost Cherry – This playful, seductive scent features sour cherry, almond, and vanilla. It’s bold and unexpected, like the eye-catching patterns on your tights.
American Eagle, AE Sheer Tights $12

Opaque Elegance for Winter: When the temperatures drop, I rely on opaque black or colored tights. There’s something so satisfying about the way they pair with a chunky sweater dress and boots, cozy yet elevated, the perfect balance of comfort and style.

Fragrance Pairing:

  • Byredo Bal d’Afrique – This scent blends neroli, marigold, and vetiver, creating a warm, comforting aroma with a touch of brightness. It pairs well with the cozy yet chic feel of opaque tights.
Micro Dot 30 Denier Sheer Tights, $20.00, CALZEDONIA

Edgy and Unexpected: For a more modern twist, try styling sheer pantyhose under high-waisted shorts with ankle boots. It’s a look that plays with textures and lengths, giving a nod to the ’90s while feeling entirely contemporary.

Fragrance Pairing:

  • Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede – This fragrance offers a futuristic, mineral-like quality with notes of mandarin, saffron, suede, and immortelle. It’s both sophisticated and avant-garde, matching the sleek, edgy vibe of your outfit. Ganymede’s metallic, leathery undertones add an otherworldly touch, making it the perfect companion for a look that’s all about pushing boundaries.

Pantyhose and the Return of Thoughtful Dressing

What excites me most about the resurgence of pantyhose is what it signifies: a return to a more intentional way of dressing. In a world that often leans toward the casual and carefree, there’s a quiet joy in taking those extra few moments to slip on a pair of pantyhose. It’s a small ritual, but one that feels meaningful, like putting the finishing brushstroke on a painting.

When I wear pantyhose today, it feels like more than just a fashion choice, it’s a connection to the women who came before me, a nod to the elegance and effort of previous generations. I smile as I recall those early mornings spent dabbing nail polish on a tiny snag, hoping to stop the run in its tracks. It’s a memory that feels like a gift, a reminder of the small, often-overlooked details that make up a life well-lived.

So here’s to the return of pantyhose, a classic that, like all great fashion, never truly goes out of style. I’ll be wearing mine with pride, embracing the nostalgia and the modern flair, and savoring every moment of this timeless trend’s elegant comeback.

How do you wear your pantyhose? I’d love to hear your favorite styles, nostalgic memories, or modern pairings that make you feel polished and chic.

Yes, I’ve always worn pantyhose, even when the other women in my generation decided not to. I’m so happy they are making a coming back with the younger girls! They just make every outfit look so much better.

I *LOVE* pantyhose! I have worn pantyhose for almost 60 years and I truly enjoy the way they feel and the way they make my legs look. There is POWER in pantyhose, that’s 100% true. I never stopped wearing pantyhose even when they went out of style. What is very disappointing, to me, is how the once well-stocked pantyhose racks at the department stores have almost completely vanished.

You are right. Supermarkets even had pantyhose.

I remember going shopping with my mom and she would take forever looking at all the various styles and colors they had back then. She was a branch manger at a bank and wore pantyhose every single day. Still quite a feat for a woman branch manager back in the day. This son was really proud of my mom!

100% Classic elegance and pulled together looks never go out of style. I feel completely underdressed without hose under a dress or skirt, not to mention bare feet in my shoes.

I’ve been in pantyhose for decades. My legs’ health depends on them. My thing has always been to wear an all nylon ultrasheer style (Berkshire) on the tighter side of the size chart which gives me decent support along with total comfort even during the hot summer months; yes, you can ditch the panties. I know that wearing hose makes shoes last longer and I sweat much less down there as well. For me I have always enjoyed having that silky feeling material against my skin and the confidence they provide throughout the entire day. I never once fell out of sorts with my nylons even when they were shunned by those pesky fashion police. I truly love my pantyhose.

I just wish my friends would come on board with you and me instead of being in the no-hose crowd. I do appreciate the attention I get from guys who notice I’m wearing hosiery.

As a millennial I didn’t grow up wearing pantyhose but I think their time has definitely returned. Pantyhose can be a really cute fashion accessory beyond just dressy evenings out on the town. Pairing with minis, shorts and rompers along with mary janes, loafers, or Doc Martens makes for a super fun juxtaposition style. And I always get sweet comments from other women my mother’s age (or older) on my pantyhose.
