Ormonde Jayne Vanilla Aube: The Former Vanilla Mistral Has a New Name

When I first reviewed this perfume in 2025, it was called Vanilla Mistral. Ormonde Jayne has since renamed it Vanilla Aube, but the fragrance itself remains the same. Created by perfumer Elodie Bernard with Linda Pilkington, it is still the dry, polished and unexpectedly restrained vanilla I remember.

The composition combines pistachio, pomegranate, black pepper and cardamom with fig, iris, cashmeran, sandalwood, vetiver, ambergris and vanilla. Despite that long notes list, it never feels overly complicated. On my skin, the opening is lightly spicy and nutty, followed by fig and iris before settling into a dry, woody base. The vanilla is present throughout, but it refrains from becoming syrupy or overtly gourmand.

That is also what separates Vanilla Aube from so many contemporary vanilla releases. It does not rely on caramel, sugar or pastry effects to make its point. Pistachio adds nuttiness rather than dessert, while iris, pepper, vetiver and ambergris keep the sweetness under control.

I still consider it an easy perfume to wear throughout the year. It has enough warmth for cooler weather, but it never becomes dense or cloying in heat. The 25 percent concentration gives it good longevity while keeping the overall effect refined and relatively close to the skin.

If you already own Vanilla Mistral, Vanilla Aube is not a new perfume you need to rediscover. It is the same composition under a new name. If you have never smelled it, however, it remains one of the more interesting examples of how vanilla can be used without turning immediately toward gourmand territory.
